Gutter services along Thain Road in Lewiston

Thain Road climbs from the lower part of Lewiston up onto the Orchards plateau, gaining about 250 feet along the way. The homes along it change with the climb: older houses at the lower end, and the Orchards' 1970s-era neighborhoods at the top. Lewiston Rain Gutters repairs, replaces, and drains gutters on homes all along Thain Road.

One road, two kinds of housing

Thain Road runs through two census tracts. The lower stretch is in an older tract; the upper end is in the central Orchards tract.

The climb

USGS elevation data puts the lower end of Thain Road at about 1,190 feet and the point where it reaches the Orchards at about 1,440 feet. Those two points are roughly a mile and a half apart in a straight line. OpenStreetMap classifies Thain Road as a primary road, one of the main routes through this part of town.

An old route

The road isn't new. Thain Road already appears in the Lewiston Orchards Life newsletter in 1913, when the Orchards were still a farming community.

Roof water on a rising street

Where a lot slopes with the road, the uphill side of the house collects surface water running down the yard, and the downhill side is where roof water naturally wants to go. Gutter and downspout layout should work with that slope, not against it.

  • Put the outlets downhill. Downspouts on the low side of the house can discharge onto ground that carries water away.
  • Carry uphill downspouts around. A downspout on the uphill wall needs an extension or buried line to the low side, or it adds roof water to the surface runoff already heading for that foundation.
  • Keep water off the neighbor's lot. On a slope, water discharged near the property line ends up next door.

Our downspouts and drain lines page covers extensions, buried lines, and outlets in detail.

Homes facing a main road

For houses that front Thain Road itself, two practical points come up. Downspouts that discharge toward the sidewalk or the street can leave ice there in winter, so those outlets are better turned toward the yard or carried underground. And ladder and truck setup has to account for traffic, so let us know when you call if the gutters you need worked on face the road.

Older homes at the lower end

With more than half the homes in the lower tract built before 1970, original steel or sectional gutters and worn fascia are common calls. If yours leak or sag in several places, compare gutter repair with a full seamless replacement before deciding.

Where Thain Road leads

At the top, Thain Road runs into the Orchards, where we work throughout the plateau, including South Central Orchards; see gutter service in the Orchards. Toward the lower part of town, we also work on Normal Hill and downtown.

Thain Road gutter questions

My house is on a slope off Thain Road. Where should my downspouts drain?

Toward the downhill side of the lot, onto ground that carries water away from the house and not toward a neighbor. Downspouts on the uphill wall usually need an extension or buried line to get there.

Can you work on gutters that face Thain Road?

Yes. Tell us when you call that the work faces the road, so the ladder and truck setup can be planned around traffic and the sidewalk.

Is the upper end of Thain Road part of the Orchards?

Yes. OpenStreetMap places the upper end of Thain Road in the Orchards, where it reaches the plateau at about 1,440 feet. The whole length of Thain Road inside Lewiston city limits is in our service area.
