Gutter repair and replacement on Normal Hill, Lewiston

Normal Hill has the oldest housing of the Lewiston neighborhoods we profile. In the census tract that covers it, the typical home was built in 1938, and more than half of all homes went up before 1940. That makes gutter work here mostly about old trim, older gutter systems, and keeping the look of period houses. Lewiston Rain Gutters serves all of Normal Hill.

Where Normal Hill sits

The neighborhood is named for the "normal school," a teacher-training school that opened on the hill in 1893 and became Lewis-Clark State College. Around the Normal Hill Cemetery the ground sits at roughly 850 feet, about 100 feet above downtown's Main Street, based on USGS elevation data. Its listed historic buildings include the sandstone former Methodist Episcopal Church at 805 6th Avenue.

What the numbers mean for your gutters

A house built in the 1920s or 1930s may be on its third or fourth set of gutters, and the fascia board behind them is often the original wood under decades of paint. Every set of gutters that came off and went back up left nail and spike holes in that board. By the time a Normal Hill house needs new gutters, the trim behind them usually needs attention too.

The gutter jobs Normal Hill houses need most

Based on the age and type of housing here, these are the services that matter most on Normal Hill.

  • Fascia and soffit repair

Original trim that has held gutters for 80 or 90 years often has soft spots, split ends, and old fastener holes. It has to be solid before new gutters are hung. See fascia and soffit repair.

  • Replacing tired gutter systems

Galvanized steel, sectional aluminum, and spike-hung gutters are common on older houses. When leaks and sagging show up at several points, moving to seamless gutters usually ends the repair cycle.

  • Half-round for period houses

Houses from the early 1900s were built with half-round gutters and round downspouts. If you want to keep that look, half-round in copper or painted metal is the closer match than K-style.

Old paint on Normal Hill trim

With nearly nine in ten homes in this tract built before 1970, almost every Normal Hill house predates 1978, the year lead paint was banned for homes. Layers of old paint on fascia and soffit may contain lead.

Federal EPA rules call for lead-safe work practices on pre-1978 homes when a job disturbs more than 20 square feet of painted exterior. Replacing the fascia along one side of an older house can pass that line. When you call about a Normal Hill house, tell us roughly when it was built so the trim work can be planned properly.

Repair first, or replace?

On an older house it's tempting to keep patching. If corners leak, spikes are backing out, and rust is showing all the way around, read our guide to deciding between repair and replacement before paying for another round of fixes. If only one spot is failing, a targeted repair is usually the right call.

Normal Hill gutter questions

My Normal Hill house was built in the 1920s. What should I expect when replacing the gutters?

Expect the fascia to need some work once the old gutters come off, since that wood has carried gutters for a long time. Also expect lead-safe practices if a lot of painted trim is disturbed. Both are planned and priced up front once we've seen the house.

Can you match the half-round gutters on my older house?

Usually, yes. Half-round gutters with round downspouts are available in copper and painted metal, in several widths. We look at what's on the house now and match the profile and bracket style as closely as possible.

Are seamless gutters a good fit on an old house?

For most older houses, yes. Seamless K-style gutters are the most common replacement and have far fewer leak points than sectional gutters. Where the period look matters, half-round is the alternative.

Is all of Normal Hill in your service area?

Yes. Normal Hill is inside Lewiston city limits, and every service we offer is available there.
